Art Deco Deluxe

Last weekend, in Napier, NZ, was Art Deco Weekend! It's when the whole city time travels back to the thirties and forties and it's really pretty! I obviously couldn't go, but I thought it would be fun to share my photos from last year.
I grew up in Napier- an East Coast town in New Zealand, which is known as the Art Deco capital of the world! Very cool. The reasoning behind isn't very cool though... To tell it quickly- there was a MASSIVE earthquake (yeah, it's a reoccurring theme in NZ) on 3rd February 1931. It killed 256 people and flattened Napier. My Grandad was born the day after- his poor Mum must have gotten such a shake up!! The earthquake totally demolished most of Napier and also gave it some new land where the sea/lakes drained away. (My early childhood garden was sandy + full of shells but not next to the sea!)
So, they rebuilt the city in the cool style of the time, which was Art Deco. Now Napier is full of amazing buildings in the style, with lots of zigzaggy embellishments and square shapes. I grew up surrounded by it and didn't really care about it until I was older, but it's pretty amazing!

Every year around the anniversary of the earthquake, they hold Art Deco Weekend. People travel from overseas just to come and dress up in their flapper costumes and ride around in vintage cars in the sun! Napier gets booked out and it's so full of pretty people wearing amazing clothes!! Some people honestly spend a fortune on Art Deco Weekend. I love the fashion of the war-time era, it's so pretty.

What we wore:

My friend Nelly wore a cream satin dress with a black tasselled fringe (she made it herself!!) a black feather boa, a sequined peacock feather headpiece (she also made it) and cute little black heels. And her amazing natural curls with a pretty little smile :)

I wore a vintage cream lace-textured dress (one of my fave dresses!) a black lace and beaded feather headband (I made it- it was fun!) black costume beads and little black heels too.
It was about 30 degrees C and my dress is 100% polyester lined = I was soooo sweaty!! Haha! So I had an outfit change for the evening festivities...... I wore a black shift dress with tasseling and my aunties vintage rabbit fur (that she gave me!!) And I put my hair up because all my waves were falling out.
They had a fun swing band playing in the soundshell and we had a picnic and danced the night away!

It may or may not have been my idea to put my feathered headband on my nephews.... :p
Now I wanna get all dressed up again!!

P.S. Did you spot my twin sister? She's in there!! Tell me if you did :p
