Eurotrip: Budapest
I'm having a couple of issues with my Munich photos so we're switching up the chronological order of the trip :p Here's Budapest!
We took the overnight train from Munich to Budapest, arriving at 9am. I managed to sleep a little bit, on the cramped bottom bunk of a tier of three. I woke up alot but I was functional the nest day so I guess I slept! Amy, a friend from highschool living there and teaching english, met us at the station. After taking our stuff to her place, we began the tourist activities with a huuuugemongous Hungarian feast at a restuarant that's walls were covered in fluttery layers of business cards, notes and pictures. The floor was covered in straw and we were given a massive box of shelled peanuts. We were putting the shells in the ashtray on the table when the waiter came over, grabbed the ashtray, said "Peanuts on the floor, please." and flung them to the ground! It was hilarious! After eating about 1/8th of my plates contents (pitiful effort-insert bad 'not Hungry in Hungary' joke here) we checked out the market, grabbed some souvenirs, and headed up to the Fisherman's Bastion and Castle on the hill.

The curves! The pointy bits! The streetlamp filigree! Perfect.
The second day we were there, Steve and I navigated our way around the city and checked out the pointy Parliament buildings and St. Stephen's Basilica (with Steve telling me 'It's mine!'..... no, Steve, just because it's your name doesn't mean it's your Basilica... ) I also kept nearly callling it the Basilisk.... too much Harry Potter.
I finally found an amazing coffee in Europe..... I don't care that it was from the most touristy American style cafe ever..... it was amazing. Three words. Black. Forest. Cappucino. Blew my mind.
We met up with Amy and went to the Gellért Thermal Baths, which were so pretty, I felt like we were swimming in an ancient Turkish palace and kept imagining people in togas drinking wine...
All in all, Budapest was really pretty and amazing in a crumbly, ancient kind of way. Endless cracked old apartment buildings (Amy's courtyard was amazing!) and a huge sense of history in the architecture. We were so lucky Amy lives there as we added it as a last minute thing, thinking we might as well go visit while we were heading that way!
Has anyone else been to Budapest or anywhere in Hungary? I'd love to hear what you thought!
*Psst.... I'll also be sharing photos from Munich, Vienna and Prague over the next week :) *
